What is a uric acid test?
A uric acid blood test (serum urate) measures how much uric acid is circulating in your blood. Why high uric acid causes gout
When uric acid stays above the saturation point, it can turn into sharp, needle-like crystals that settle in joints — classically the big toe. What high uric acid means (hyperuricaemia)
A high uric acid level is called hyperuricaemia. Common drivers include a diet rich in red meat, organ meats, and shellfish; alcohol (especially beer); sugary drinks high in fructose; being overweight; certain medicines such as water tablets (diuretics); and reduced kidney clearance. Importantly, most people with a high level never develop gout — but it does raise the risk, along with kidney stones, and it often travels with high blood pressure and metabolic syndrome. What low uric acid means

- Cut back on purine-heavy foods — red and organ meats, and shellfish
- Limit alcohol, especially beer, and sugary (fructose) drinks
- Lose excess weight gradually — crash diets can temporarily raise uric acid
- Stay well hydrated to help your kidneys flush out urate
- Favour low-fat dairy, vegetables, and cherries, which are linked to lower levels
